Behind the Veil in Wadi Rum: A Women-Only Cultural Experience

(Duration: One day & one night—or extend your stay)

Step into the heart of Bedouin life with this unique women-only tour and workshop. Hosted by Saleh’s wife, Alia, and his mother, Khadra, this immersive experience offers a rare glimpse into the traditions, stories, and daily rhythms of Bedouin women. In a safe and welcoming environment, they can remove their veils and share their lives openly—laughing, cooking, and connecting with you as equals.

What to Expect

This isn’t just a tour—it’s an invitation to step behind the veil and experience the rich heritage of Wadi Rum through the eyes of its women. Together, you’ll:

  • Shop, Cook, and Create: Explore local markets, prepare traditional Bedouin dishes (like bread, tea, and coffee), and cook meals both in the house and under the desert sky.
  • Learn Natural Remedies: Discover time-honored herbal remedies for common ailments passed down through generations.
  • Share Stories: Bring photos from home to exchange stories and compare lives—bridging cultures over shared experiences.

A Day in the Desert

After the workshop, join a guided desert tour led by Saleh or Alia. Hop into the back of an open 4x4 with your group of women, exploring iconic landmarks like those featured in Tour 1: Magic of Wadi Rum or other custom routes. While Saleh drives and assists with translations, Alia takes the wheel too—learning English and sharing her love for Wadi Rum along the way.

Meet Your Hosts

  1. Khadra (Saleh’s Mother):

    • Born in a tent in Wadi Rum, Khadra embodies the spirit of the desert. As the herdswoman of the family, she tends to camels and goats, milks them, and preserves age-old traditions. Her wisdom and warmth make her a cherished storyteller and guide.

  2. Alia (Saleh’s Wife):

    • A full partner in the family business, Alia balances tradition and modernity. Though her face remains veiled in public spaces, among women she opens up freely about her life, her choices, and why she finds beauty in the rugged landscapes of Wadi Rum.

Why This Experience Stands Out

  • Women-Only Space: A judgment-free zone where women can connect authentically.
  • Cultural Immersion: Learn firsthand about Bedouin traditions, food, and natural remedies.
  • Shared Adventures: Combine intimate workshops with thrilling desert explorations.

Who Is This For?

This experience is ideal for women travelers seeking meaningful connections and cultural insights. Whether you’re a solo adventurer, part of a small group, or looking for something truly unique, this tour promises memories that will linger long after your journey ends.

We loved everything about our tour. Saleh's family was very welcoming and treated us like a part of the family. His wife prepared us lunch and it was one of the most delicious and homy meals we had in Jordan. His son, Muadh took us on the 4x4 tour and took us to the most beautiful and important sites as we were short on time. We will come again and take a longer tour with Saleh next time.

Authentic and Beautiful! We spent 1 day and 1 night at Saleh's camp and it was everything we wanted. When we first arrived we felt right at home as we were welcomed into their house for tea and snacks.Did a short 1 hour tour and then we were treated to an amazing homemade lunch from Saleh's wife. After lunch Saleh's oldest son took us on a 6 hour adventure around Wadi Rum and all the sights, most of them we ended up having to ourselves. After the tour we were brought back to camp, first impressions are always something and this place did not disappoint. Our room was a 2 person Bedouin cabin with a small window with a huge view.Saleh has multiple buildings for small to large groups and everything in-between.Please note this is not the giant companies with domes and A/C and pools, Saleh's camp is a family run business and is more authentic with simple rooms and great views. After check in we went to an amazing sunset spot, then we were called for another home cooked meal.. Spectacular. Our night was filled with drum lessons and conversation by the fire.I highly recommend it.

Great experience as first-time visitors in Wadi Rum. Due to itinerary constraints, we could only fit a 3-hour tour in our schedule, but it was well worth it. Communication prior to the tour via Whatsapp was very smooth and easy, and they did not ask for pre-payment of any form. Saleh sent us a location in the Wadi Rum Village to meet, where we parked our rental car at his house. We were greeted by his family upon arrival, and offered tea and coffee while waiting for him. The vehicle was very nice and in good condition, it was a Toyota pick-up with a bench in the back to enjoy the desert views. The tour was beautiful, Saleh drove us to the main desert sights and provided historical context to understand the Wadi Rum as a place of passage. We particularly enjoyed the Red Sand Dunes, the Khazali Canyon and the Special Canyon hike. We found the bridges to be very touristy and not that worth it. I’d definitely recommend them for a Wadi Rum tour!

Saleh’s camp is the best experience I had in Jordan! It is a real authentic Bedouin experience. The price we paid was very reasonable for a fully package. We arrived way earlier than expected but Saleh’s family were generous enough to offer us lunch at their home, before going on a safari tour with his son to the best spots in Wadi Rum. Their camp and the night stars were amazing! Great place for families, friends, or couples!! This is really the best experience I had in Jordan.
